... with Monira Al Qadiri on Refineries, Shipwrecks, and Ancient Egypt
In this episode of WAS MIT KUNST, recorded live at Soho House Berlin following a screening of her films CRUDE EYE and OH BODY OF MINE, Johann König speaks with artist Monira Al Qadiri about the refineries she grew up next to in Kuwait, the tanker graveyards of South Asia, and her recent turn toward ancient Egyptian mythology, the subject of her current exhibition THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF BEASTS at KÖNIG GALERIE.
Al Qadiri lives and works in Berlin. Born in Senegal and raised in Kuwait, she moved to Japan at age 16 and lived there for a decade. Originally trained as a painter, she transitioned to video and animation before arriving at sculpture. She describes this process as one discipline continually reshaping into the next. Her work repeatedly returns to oil—as a substance, an industry, a myth, and an inheritance—and, more recently, to ancient Egyptian mythologies.
