... with Sammy Engelberg on Discretion, Private Collections, and the Quiet Side of the Art Market
Discretion comes first. On The Art Marketplace, a secondary-market platform for works from $50K upwards, listings show the artist, size, year, location and price, but no image, no title and no provenance. This protects owners, artists and the works themselves from becoming “burned” through too much exposure. Vetted inquirers receive the details privately and see the work before any purchase. The platform also gives buyers access to works from private collections that are not available anywhere else.
In this episode, Johann König speaks with co-founder Sammy Engelberg, who grew up in Vienna surrounded by art and spent several years at Sotheby’s building data and pricing models. He explains how that experience shaped a curated selection of works that is placed discreetly and personally, why technology supports the process but every relationship is still handled individually, and how the platform vets both works and collectors.
A conversation about discretion, trust and how the art market works behind the scenes.
